Coachmans sign

A few months ago, the former home of Coachman's Dinner & Pancake House in Salt Lake City, Utah, was demolished to make way for new development. The restaurant had been closed for years, and soon the familiar building that had welcomed customers for decades was gone.

But something remarkable happened.

As demolition crews prepared the site, community members began asking one question:

"What will happen to the sign?"

People weren't asking to save the building. They were asking to save the sign.

Why?

Because that sign had become more than advertising. It had become a landmark. In response to overwhelming community support, the owners agreed to donate the iconic neon sign so it could be preserved, restored, and eventually displayed once again.

I used to live in Salt Lake City, and remember driving past Coachman's countless times. I recognized that sign long before I knew anything about the restaurant itself. Seeing it standing alone beside the demolished building reminded me of something we often say in the sign industry:

What's in a sign?

The answer is... far more than most people realize.

A sign is often the first impression your customers have of your business. Before anyone walks through your doors, speaks with your employees, or experiences your products and services, they see your sign.

It introduces your brand.

It communicates your professionalism.

It tells people whether your business is established, trustworthy, modern, classic, premium, or forgettable.

Over time, a great sign becomes part of a community. It helps people give directions. It becomes a meeting place. It appears in family photographs. It quietly becomes part of the memories people make.

The Coachman's sign proved something that every successful business owner should remember:

A quality sign can outlive the business it was built for.

That doesn't happen by accident.

It happens when a sign is thoughtfully designed, expertly manufactured, and built to stand the test of time. While trends change and buildings are replaced, great craftsmanship continues telling the story.

At Bakers' Signs & Manufacturing, we've spent decades building signs that are designed not only to attract customers today, but to represent businesses for generations to come. Our goal is always the same: to build signs that people will remember.

Because the best signs don't just identify a business. They become part of its legacy.
